Turn: Washington’s Spies season 4 episode 1 video: Power of the press
As the cast and crew describes it in the video below, one of the big things that you’re going to see play out over the season, and even in the opening minutes of the premiere, is just how important the newspaper is. It’s one of the only ways for information to spread, and as a result of that, it’s the perfect way for people like Benedict Arnold to create propaganda and spread it. This is a way for people like him and Abe to try to control things, and it’s a big part of what makes a good spy in this era. You can include hidden messages, or dissuade people from making specific decisions. There are few things that have this sort of power.
Obviously, flash forward to today, where the press is often use to spread a wide array of different narratives at the same time. The big difference now is that you can probably find some sort of outlet or venue, virtually no matter who you are, where your viewpoint can be spread and reinforced. It’s terrifying in so many ways, but a big part of the fabric of the country.
In getting back to Turn, expect to see the press serving as a key endpoint in setting up the series’ endgame. It’s not clear precisely at what point in history the show will stop, but you do know the end result. Some of Washington’s Spies end up being victorious enough in order to ensure that the Americans get to continue on their life without the same sort of British control. Meanwhile, freedom of the press becomes an institution. This is a story of beginnings much more than it is of endings.
