Should NCIS ever consider a summer spin-off series?
There is one reason above all others for this to be a move for CBS to consider: Ratings. Even if they have fallen steadily over the past few years, NCIS proper remains the most-watched show on television. Meanwhile, NCIS: Los Angeles and NCIS: New Orleans remain powerful shows in their own right. If you were to put on a ten-episode series in the summer, you may be able to bring in many of these viewers and also create some new crossover opportunities to boot.
There are certainly many other field offices out there that the show could base a spin-off on — there’s a northeast office in Rhode Island, one in Florida, and there are even some ones that are located in Hawaii (the Hawaii Five-0 crossovers here are almost too easy) and even Asia, provided that the show really wanted to go international. The options are fairly unlimited when it comes to potential settings.
So why isn’t this something that CBS considers more than they are? One of the issues with doing this is that if they were to air it on Tuesday nights, they’d have to remove a series of repeats from one of their established shows. They may feel as though these shows are worth keeping on the air for the sake of boosting the original show a little bit further.
Beyond that, though, the other issue may just be a fear that putting another NCIS on the air could dilute the franchise in some way, and that may not be something that they want to risk. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing, right? Having four of the same sort of show on the air could be a bridge too far for CBS.
Our advice? Think about this idea, and consider if there is a pitch out there that could make it work. Otherwise, maybe it’s something you store away. (Regardless, CBS should be trying to program in the summer even more than they are.)

How about “NCIS: At Sea” with stories focused on shipboard crimes and events. Would allow them to continue the series, but with a summer theme as well. Extending that idea, each week could be on different type of ship (i.e. destroyer, aircraft carrier, submarine, etc.) with a different ensemble on each ship. They could have one of the main characters from the regular shows make a guest appearance each week to bring a bit of continuity. Just thinking – and adding to your thoughts.
