John Goodman explains how Roseanne revival will handle Dan’s death
The bigger question with the show returning to ABC next year is how in the world the writers are going to handle that. Will they act like it was all some alternate reality, a dream, or ignore it altogether as though it never happened? Judging from what John Goodman himself said on the subject to ABC News, it may be the latter:
“I don’t know. I think they’re just going to ignore it. There might be a funny reference to it. It’s going to be all new turf. We were in our 40s when we left off. I myself have applied for Medicare. We’re going to have grandkids. It’s just like a new life. I don’t know what they’re going to do, but I’m excited to try it this way.”
In some instances, the idea of a show completely altering its history would be infuriating. In this case, we’re just going to roll with it given that A) we didn’t love the end of Roseanne the series and B) there’s nothing fun that could come out of the show sans John Goodman in the cast. Having him around is the better thing for the show itself, and with that, it’s almost certainly the better thing for us as a viewer of it. We’re very much intrigued to see how he is going to factor into it now, and what discussions the show is going to feature in 2018. There is an opportunity for them to be socially-conscious, and join some of ABC’s smarter family comedies such as Fresh Off the Boat or black-ish.
Alas, there is no specific premiere date for the Roseanne revival just yet. Let’s just hope that now proves to be the right time to have brought the show back after so long with it off the air.
What do you think: Is now the best possible time to have more Roseanne on the air, and what is the best way to handle Dan’s death? Be sure to share some more of your thoughts with a comment below! (Photo: ABC.)
