American Gods finale: About Kristin Chenoweth’s Ostara a.k.a. Easter

Ostara

Throughout American Gods season 1, we’ve seen the Starz series introduce a wide array of colorful characters to represent the gods, both old and new. For the big finale (airing on Sunday night), they are introducing another dimension of that world courtesy of Ostara, (otherwise known as Easter), and played by actress Kristin Chenoweth.

In getting Chenoweth on board the show in the first place, American Gods is bringing executive producer Bryan Fuller back into orbit once more with someone he worked with on Pushing Daisies, and someone who even won an Emmy for her part on the show. (Just for fun, we’ve included her Emmy speech below since it’s one of the sweetest and most memorable ones in recent memory.)

Does this collaboration mean that we could get Chi McBride, Anna Friel, or Lee Pace on American Gods season 2? That’s something we’re spraying to the TV gods (and to Bryan Fuller) to make happen, because it would be seriously awesome to see. With Halt and Catch Fire getting set to air its final season a little bit later this year, maybe Lee will be available?

In getting back to Ostara / Easter, this character is going to be one of the last on the recruitment tour for Mr. Wednesday as he does his best to round up some of the Old Gods to prepare for war against some of the new ones. As you can learn more in a new clip (over at Entertainment Weekly), about Easter’s position that is truly unique. She tries on the surface to maintain such a bright, sunny demeanor, but underneath the surface she is someone dealing with a prevailing sense of frustration over her treatment over the years. Back before the era of Jesus Christ, eggs were decorated and the spring was celebrated in her name. Now, Jesus has taken center stage, which amplifies the irony of her being surrounded by Christ representations in the scene where Wednesday visits her.

Obviously, you want to see Easter continue to be a part of this world beyond this episode — given how almost every episode of season 1 has been building towards a battle, you want to see what that could look like on the other side. Now we are curious to see what Easter’s role in this could be? She’s a bit of a wild card and that makes her character all the more exciting.
