America’s Got Talent auditions: Kechi shares plane crash story, Ed Sheeran cover

Kechi

Tuesday night’s America’s Got Talent audition show is going to contain yet another brilliant performance, this time from a woman named Kechi. She has an incredible voice, but there is an amazing story to go along with it. When she was 16 years old, she survived a plane crash that left everyone but two passengers dead. That is the sort of past that can really haunt someone, since it does bring to mind such things as survivor’s guilt and reliving those painful memories.

It’s a hard thing to overcome. Yet, Kechi does that in this audition as she belts out a great rendition of Ed Sheeran’s “Thinking Out Loud.” For one, we LOVE that she didn’t just come on stage and sing something by Whitney Houston or Celine Dion. She’s an inspiration for singers over 30 on this show in that regard, in addition to people everywhere for her story. She has a good command over what she’s doing with her pitch and her tone, and best of all there’s a tenderness and a relatability to it. This is the difference between someone with experience singing this song and someone who’s still pretty green — she feels the lyrics more, and that connection with the audience is what could make her a major threat if she makes it fairly far into this season.

It’s obvious that she’s going to the next round. That much is clear. If you want to debate if she gets a Golden Buzzer you can certainly do that, but we feel like she’s not just because most of the Golden Buzzer recipients are people you don’t see much of before the show … unless AGT is really in the business of tricking us.

Credit to the talent pool out there and to those casting the show, as there have really been some good singers on the past two seasons. Maybe there’s been a more active recruiting method, or there are more people simply coming out of the woodwork because of the presence of Simon Cowell as judge. No matter what, it’s just nice to see the talent of the singers the past two seasons rise to the level of some of the other categories after several years of a lull.
