Nashville season 5: Connie Britton sees no end in sight, even after exit
Speaking first about her exit on The Today Show this morning, Britton made it clear that there were several different reasons behind her move to leave, but she also wanted to make sure that the exit felt right for the world and wasn’t rushed behind the scenes:
“There were a lot of different reasons. Some of them were creative and some of them were personal … For me, what was important was doing it in conjunction with the writers doing it in a space and time that felt really right and appropriate for the show. We spent a lot of time really figuring out what that was going to look like and how it was going to work.”
Britton went on to praise the show’s “rich world,” saying that it could “go on indefinitely” even without the character of Rayna James around as a part of it. That much is most likely true, largely because there are so man different trends constantly shaping that industry. It’s not like country music will be going away tomorrow, or at some other point in the near future. It’s going to be around a long time, as are some of the major issues that plague it at present such as getting a diverse roster of performers and finding new ways for some of these stories to be told.
So far, Nashville is showing that commercially, the show can also go on — the ratings for the midseason premiere this past Thursday were largely in line with what they were for the first half of the season. The show already has a season 6 renewal from CMT, and with this network pairing there is no reason to think that anything will go south for the show or its story for a rather-long time to come.
Who knows? Maybe there will be a flashback sequence down the line where Britton could resurface; we know that the show would probably not turn her away.
