Shadowhunters season 2 episode 11 review: How was Sebastian’s debut?

Shadowhunters season 2 episode 11 review

Shadowhunters season 2 episode 11 debuted on Freeform tonight after an extremely long wait; was it actually worthwhile?

In looking back at “Mea Maxima Culpa,” the biggest takeaway that we can offer from this episode is that Sebastian is SUPER creepy. He’s also powerful, manipulative, and one of the most intriguing characters offered up on the story so far. His scenes with Issy showed a number of different things, whether it be his command of his own narrative, his influence, and also the sheer power of his presence. Will Tudor is already a great cast here, if nor for the scene with the fire alone near the end of the episode tonight.

This character did not produce the only standout moments of the episode, but he does offer up a good sense as to what could be coming down the road. Think of this more as a foundation.

As for Clary and Simon… – This episode started with the two of them in a very good place. However, by the end of it, they may be on far rockier ground. Thanks to Valentine and an especially torturous scene, it was revealed that Jace is not actually his son, and he and Clary are not related at all. Therefore, there is a good chance that Clary and Jace could be together if they really wanted to. Simon’s a nice guy, but will he be able to handle being a part of a newly-emerging love triangle?

For those who enjoy good old-fashioned love triangles, this could be for them! With that said, we think the show would be better served to address this one way or another soon given that so many other shows do have love triangle stories out there as it is and this show can do so much more than this.

Final verdict

As a whole, Shadowhunters season 2 episode 11 was more of a worthy introduction to the second half of the season than an installment that blew the doors off of the entire world of the show. The Shadowhunters and Downworlders are gearing up for chaos, and it’s not going to take too much time for that conflict to get going.

One thing that we do wish is that with these 20 episodes, Shadowhunters would offer up some further spotlights to their supporting characters — after all, there were a few who barely made their presence known during this episode. Episode Grade: B.
