Last Week Tonight with John Oliver talks Paris Agreement, Vladimir Putin

Paris Agreement

Tonight, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver aired its first new episode in the past two weeks, and of course, the Paris Agreement was a key subject. There was a lot to dive into here, especially when it came to the speech from Donald Trump on the subject.

There were many things that Oliver had a problem with when it comes to Trump, but one of the biggest ones was the sheer arrogance that Trump showed in claiming that the agreement put America at a great “economic disadvantage.” He almost acted as though the other countries were out to get America, and he wanted to be able to show them just how right he was and how wrong they in turn were. Basically, this was him puffing his chest.

Obviously, this segment had a strong political leaning to it, but odds are, you know this already if you are watching. There’s no real reason to look in-depth at some of what Oliver had to say about Trump. However, there is some great comedy that came out of the segment, including some of the following:

1. Semantics – Oliver had a lot of move with Trump and him frequently omitting words.

2. Trump changing subjects – The portion of a Trump speech that aired, which featured him talking about a dozen or so subjects without finishing any thought, was brilliant.

3. Nations setting their own goals – There is nothing altogether binding about the agreement at all! Basically, Trump said no to an agreement that really didn’t have any consequences other than being publicly shamed by other nations. The only thing that Trump did in leaving was cause a lot of negativity, mostly for no good reason.

4. Oliver singing “Be Our Guest” as Macron – The new French leader is welcoming! America, not so much.

While this wasn’t the most hilarious main segment in the history of Last Week Tonight, it definitely did contain a lot of valuable information. If you haven’t seen it yet, be sure to check it out on YouTube in the morning. One last surprise: Bank of America, Phillip Morris, and Walmart are suddenly the good guys in this case, as they are supporting the agreement and stronger environmental standards.

Also tonight – Oliver talked briefly about Vladimir Putin and his recent media tour — there were some funny lines in here, but nothing that wasn’t learned in the in-depth piece that he did on Russia in the past.
