Will The White Princess season 2 happen? What’s in the way
The first glowing problem with the idea of a season 2 is simply the fact that the show was also planned out to be a limited series and a fairly self-contained story. You get in, you get to see a great story, and then you get out and move on to the next thing. Rather than hoping for a season 2 here, maybe the better hope is finding a new project to feature Emma Frost’s writing talent that is also within the world of historical drama. You could go back before this series and The White Queen in time, or move a little bit beyond the Tudor era if you don’t want to tread on ground that’s been covered a million times or so already.
One of the things that Starz should do in general is establish some sort of tradition of doing a historical series like this once every year or so; if viewers start to get a sense that this is going to become your brand, they will actively seek it out far more. It’s the sort of “if you build it, they will come” thinking that has helped many other networks further establish an audience over the years. They’ve figured out how to make these shows edgy, interesting, relevant, and affordable for them. The latter is especially significant when you consider just how expensive some of these costume dramas can become — just look over at the budget for Netflix’s The Crown as a prime example of that.
If any further news on The White Princess itself does come out in the days / weeks to come, we will have it for you here. For the time being, though, it seems best to not hold to any particular set of expectations.
