Fear the Walking Dead season 3 to feature major death

Going into Fear the Walking Dead, it seems like AMC and executive producer Dave Erickson want you to know that there will be a huge death — one that could be one of the most significant ones in not just the show, but also the entire franchise.

It’s fair to wonder who the dearly departed character will be — after all, The Walking Dead proper created an entire cliffhanger around it at the end of this past season — but it’s not the only thing to wonder. Instead, there’s also some merit to be found in how we see this character go. This is something that Erickson detailed further in an interview with Comic Book Resources setting up the big finale tomorrow:

“We wanted a heroic arc. I think we did that. There’s a certain conventional way to go about a character’s death. We could have done that. Once people see the episode, they will see what I mean. What we chose to do is follow a route where having accomplished something, having saved loved ones that are dear, you now get kicked in the gut by the Apocalypse and the randomness of the violence. The moment itself should be sudden. It should be jarring. It has a very profound impact on all the other characters, all the members of the family. It’s a pivotal moment that drives the rest of the season. That’s the goal whenever you lose a character, especially one that important. It needs to resonate.”

So basically, you need to start getting prepared now. The show last season did give you a major death in the form of Chris, and with that, there are probably only a handful of people whose departures would really fit the bill as one as “important” as Erickson is hyping them up to be. Think along the lines here of Alicia, Travis, Madison, Nick, or Strand. Luciana has her fans out there, but given that she’s already near-death as it is, wouldn’t it be a little bit obvious for it to be her?

Given that Erickson doesn’t exactly reveal the timing of when said death could be happening, just consider this a moment to be in your back pocket as the season starts to further progress.
