America’s Got Talent: Ventriloquist Darci Lynne gets Mel B’s Golden Buzzer

Mel B's Golden Buzzer

Who was Mel B’s Golden Buzzer on America’s Got Talent this season? Meet Darci Lynne Farmer, who managed to earn it tonight! She came out shy, but then her puppet came alive with a song in her heart.

The show certainly didn’t hide that Mel was going to be pushing her button at the end of the episode, given that the editors hyped it up from the very beginning of the two hours. This, creatively, was a little bit of a questionable move when you consider that from the very beginning of this performance, it was clear what was going to happen here.

The easiest way to describe Darci is as the next Terry Fator, since the comparisons between the two are very obvious. Both of them do ventriloquism and singing, and they are really talented in each. It’s one thing to be able to sing, but it’s something different to be able to come out there and do it without moving your mouth. Mel opted to give her the Golden Buzzer after calling the act brilliant.

Want to know the part of this actually moved us the most? It was simple, but really powerful — when Darci’s mother came out on stage and hugged not only Darci, but the puppet just as much as though they were a real person. The little things are what make a performance like this so great.

Now, the thing that Darci will have to focus on entering the next phase of the competition is figuring out how to (somehow) up her game from everything that she brought to the table tonight. This means in part finding a way to impress with different songs and possibly different voices. One of the things that Fator did so effectively was come up with so many different characters so that he was not just coming out there and doing the same thing.

For now, Darci is off to a great start — she now has to figure out the right way for her to move forward and continue to impress.
