Arrow season 6: Could Oliver’s son play a far larger role?

Oliver's son

At the end of Arrow season 5, it was clear that Oliver’s son William was someone caught in Adrian Chase’s crosshairs. The good news is that he survived the final stroke from Prometheus. The bad news? Everyone else beyond him and Oliver is seemingly gone.

After going through what he did with Prometheus, Oliver may be starting to carry with him a different philosophy when it comes to his family: Specifically, he may be starting to think that there is a little bit more of a reason to keep his child close and in Star City. When he sent the kid away, the idea at the time was that nobody would be able to track the villain down. However, since that moment, maybe the sentiment has changed. It does make a little bit more sense, after all, for Oliver to keep his child close to him as opposed to letting him be out somewhere that things like this could happen to him again.

One major clue that William could have a larger role in season 6 comes via Stephen Amell himself, who said at Heroes & Villains Fan Fest in London this past weekend that “family” is one of the big themes for the upcoming season. Sure, he does have a wonderful extended family in the form of Diggle, Felicity, and the rest of the team fighting crime with him. Yet, William and Thea are two of the only people that he has left in terms of his own flesh and blood. He needs to hold them close, since he otherwise runs the risk of not having anyone that he can cling to that reminds him of his own past.

Also, isn’t Oliver with a kid adorable? There are always concerns when it comes to bringing someone like William more into the world of the show, but there is something about their relationship that makes us feel like they won’t fall into some of the same “kids on TV” pitfalls. It also helps that this kid is coming at a time when Oliver is more mature and can let go of some of his demons.
