The Bachelorette: Emily Maynard contestant Michael Nance dead at 31

Michael Nance

There was a lot of comedy that came out of The Bachelorette last night, but there’s now sad news coming from Bachelor Nation. Michael Nance, a former contestant on Emily Maynard’s season of the show, has died at the age of 31. The specific cause of his death is still unclear, but he was found early Monday morning. In the end, the news is just sad and thoughts go out to all who knew him.

The reality is that Michael’s time on the show is such a mere fraction of his life for everyone who knew him. He was only on four episodes, and over that time not much was learned about him beyond that he was a rehab counselor and that he seemed like a fairly nice guy. The latter is certainly not something that you get from all of the men who appear on this show.

The people who did know him the best from the world of the show where the other men, who of course spent the majority of their time with him rather than with Emily, who would only see them for dates over the course of the season. Below, you can see tributes from the likes of Sean Lowe, Arie Luyendyk Jr., Chris Bukowski, and producer Elan Gale, who works closely with many of the contestants on the show every season. They give you a pretty good sense as to what sort of man Michael was away from the cameras, and how they remembered him whether it be from the show or beyond.

Meanwhile, Emily herself also wrote a small tribute to Michael on her own Twitter account, and there has to be a great deal of reflection that goes with this for her. This was a man who did give up a part of his normal life to see if there was potential for a romantic relationship with her; while there may be other benefits to being on a show like The Bachelorette, on a granular level this is what the show boils down to. It’s about people trying to see if they have a future with each other after the fact, and they are just thrown into a crazy ringer while they try to figure it out.

Once again, thoughts go out to Nance’s family and loved ones in the midst of what has to be a difficult, trying time. (Photo: ABC.)
