The Durrells season 2 finale: Could Louisa leave Corfu?
Case in point, the decision that remained firmly on Louisa’s mind over the course of the hour. Was this time in Corfu just a holiday? Was it time for her to return home? This was proposed by Hugh to her at the start of the episode, and she made it clear that she would think about it. “Thinking about it” apparently equals “Hugh getting opportunities to scheme and be manipulative,” since he tried to get under her skin somewhat by suggesting she had ulterior motives to stay in the form of Spiro. He may not have done so maliciously, but suggesting said motives had the same effect.
Somehow, Hugh did manage to get the sympathy back on his side, albeit in a way that he probably did not want. Vasilia stabbed him, and then the story morphed into trying to save the man.
Unfortunately, finding a doctor to save the poor man in time came about at a most inopportune time, given that there was another medical crisis unfolding over the course of the hour.
About a birth
Elsewhere in the episode, the show took on the subject of Leonora’s birth in a way that was serious at times and almost comical at others in the way that so many characters were actually learning about the concept of a birth for the first time. These characters are already strangers in a strange land, and this largely added to it.
Let’s just say that if there was a show that needed a crossover with Call the Midwife like no other, this was clearly it. Who knew that Leslie was going to be so effective in this position?
Tying together the loose ends
The good news is that Leonora eventually gave birth to a baby boy, and that Hugh turned out to be okay. He then got a chance to apologize to Louisa for getting her roped into some of his schemes, and accepted the fact that she wasn’t going to be coming with him.
As the finale wrapped up, the story did move forward a bit of time in order to focus more on the celebration around the baby, which was as teary-eyed a moment as you will have with this. Also, you had plenty of humor courtesy of Leslie and Margo, who got to experience the feeling of men fighting over here.
If there remains a prevailing critique for The Durrells, it is it trying to do too much in a relatively short period of time. If there were even two more episodes in a season, maybe there’d be more time to focus on individual characters and relationships. As it is, there are some developments that feel a tad rushed — having more of a good show, one that encompasses humor and heartfelt emotion, is never a bad news.
Looking ahead to The Durrells season 3
One of the big things worth noting right now is the sole fact that there is a third season for the series coming on ITV. If you head over here, there are some further details worth sharing on that subject.
