Supergirl season 3: Floriana Lima opens up about reduced role

Floriana Lima

On Friday, one of the most surprising Supergirl stories of the month was revealed when it comes to the future of Floriana Lima. While she is returning for a third season, she’s not planning to be a series regular. She is moving on to pursue some other avenues, and will make some guest appearances instead. The specific number of appearances is not clear at present, but here’s to hoping that they will be throughout as to better ensure that the Maggie – Alex relationship stays strong. While it’s not often that you stay with the first person you truly love (which Alex is hoping to), there is such a deep connection between these two characters that it’s easy to believe it’s possible.

Lima opened up for the first time on the news in a series of posts on Twitter, making it clear that she has no plans to depart the show altogether:

“Sanvers fans are beautiful! The best part of playing Maggie is getting to share an inspiring LOVE story&representing the LGBTQ+ community… While this role was only meant for one season, I’m excited to appear in season 3, as we see the #Supergirl story unfold #Sanvers #NotOverYet”

What probably happened here feels pretty clear: Nobody knew how popular the Alex – Maggie relationship was going to be, so with that there wasn’t any way to sign up the latter character for several seasons after she first debuted. Getting more of her seems to be a direct reaction to just how popular she was, and it should prove interesting to see how the show writes around her in the event that Maggie and Alex remain romantically intertwined.

What makes all of this more interesting at present is seeing exactly where the writers left off the Maggie and Alex characters — Alex proposed to her! It was spur-of-the-moment, but it did feel like she meant it and a wedding on this show would be a heck of a lot of fun. It’s one of the few proper things that these superhero shows really haven’t had an opportunity to explore fully on The CW. The closest that we got was with Oliver and Felicity on Arrow season 4, and that wedding was more of a stunt in order to draw out the bad guys.
