Shadowhunters season 2 episode 11 spoilers: ‘Mea Maxima Culpa’
The first thing worthy of a little bit of discussion comes via the title of the June 5 episode: “Mea Maxima Culpa.” Odds are, many people out there are familiar with the expression “mea culpa” as a means of declaring one’s own fault. “Mea maxima culpa” is a further extension of that expression great fault or regret. The phrase is a part of the Confiteor, an expression of Catholic Mass. It is said after two utterances of “mea culpa.” There is also a documentary film out there entitled “Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God,” which chronicles further instances of abuse within the Catholic Church. This is one of the more religious titles created for the show, but it does touch on some of the sacredness associated with the Soul Sword and the stakes that many different characters on the show are facing at present.
Beyond all of this, the Freeform synopsis below teases ever so slightly what is coming in this episode: “Everyone is dealing with the aftermath of the Soul Sword attack at the Institute.” The words “ever so slightly” were used here on purpose, given that this is as vague a synopsis as you could possibly have for the episode. The photo above is from the episode, but it is also vague in its own right. The big things worth noting at the moment is mostly that by the end of this episode, you will get a better sense of precisely what is going on at the institute and beyond. Think in terms of what the final ten episodes of the season will look like. With Sebastian coming, the entire story of the show is about to descend into exciting chaos and pandemonium. It should be fun for us as a viewer, but probably less fun for the characters to try to navigate through all things considered.
