Game of Thrones season 7 will move at rapid pace

When Game of Thrones season 7 premieres on HBO this July, there may be one thing that will absolutely stun you: The pace. The show is going to be moving faster than ever before, mostly because there is so much ground to cover and so many big moments to put on screen.

Could you claim that the move is a consequence of the show moving at a little too slow a pace in other spots? Sure, and it’s hard to fight you on that. Nonetheless, the George R.R. Martin adaptation had to move at this past almost in order to cover one book a season for the first few years ago. The show may be adapting the final two books of A Song of Ice and Fire into three different seasons, but there is a lot of ground to cover. Plus, in the earlier seasons it may have been easier to cut stuff out. Now, almost every little word matters as you set up the endgame for the series as a whole.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly in a recent piece, actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Jaime Lannister) claimed that many things that previously would take a whole season to unravel now will do so over the course of a single episode. Meanwhile, Kit Harington (Jon Snow) added the following:

“This season is really different than any other season because it’s accelerating toward the end, a lot of stuff collides and happens much much quicker than you’re used to seeing on Thrones … it’s so different than what everybody is used to. It’s quite exciting.”

This is a season likely building towards an epic conclusion, one that will be the culmination of a lengthy, exciting journey. If the show is able to accelerate its pace without sacrificing its story or any of its characters, it’s hard to see it categorized as anything other than a great victory for the show and something that will be remembered years from now. No other series is facing anywhere near this sort of pressure, but David Benioff and D.B. Weiss seem more than prepared for it as showrunners.
