Britain’s Got Talent: Kyle Tomlinson is David Walliams’ Golden Buzzer act

David Walliams' Golden Buzzer

Over the course of the past few years, David Walliams’ Golden Buzzer acts on Britain’s Got Talent tend to be cheeky and corny. Kyle Tomlinson did his best to correct that over the course of this weekend’s episode. He was a legitimately good performer, and someone who seemed to get the buzzer out of an emotional connection.

This was not the first time that Kyle had auditioned for the show; when he tried out previously, David encouraged him to get better, and clearly he did that. The big surprise of the night is mostly that he is a singer, and David himself has said in interviews that this is one of his least-favorite types of acts because so many of them are so similar. (What’s interesting about that in turn is that when you look at David’s Golden Buzzer history, most of them have been for acts with some sort of vocal component to them.)

What are Kyle’s chances of winning the whole show as a result of the Golden Buzzer? There’s a path for him to enter the final, but given how many singers are on this show and also the recent aversion to them by the British public, it’s still difficult to give him the edge. For the time being, just knowing that he is in the semifinal show should be enough of a reason for him to celebrate. He gets an opportunity to perform at a part of the show he wasn’t certain to be at previously, and he also gets to validate Walliams as a judge in the process.

Granted, we’ll be the first to admit that people probably freaked out a little too much in the past over him giving the Golden Buzzer to joke acts — they had zero shot at winning, but they made such bizarre, incredible TV moments. They were people who would never have an opportunity to have this sort of fun otherwise, and he gave them something that they will never forget. Plus, it angered Simon Cowell and there is always a little bit of joy that comes out of this act alone.
