Scandal season 6 finale: Kerry Washington reveals original ending
In a new appearance on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah this week, star Kerry Washington opened up in part about how the season 6 finale was going to end with the Russians hacking the election. However, it turns out that this would have been, in her words, a “reality show.” The writers ended up changing it, and in general this season was one of the most challenging ones for them overall because of trying to create some drama that is compelling enough to catch up with what is actually happening in the real world.
There is another political angle that is thrown in here, as Washington discusses her reaction to seeing “Olivia Pope” trending on Twitter as a means to help save the country from Donald Trump being elected President:
“It actually made me very angry. I’m super happy that we’re in the zeitgeist, but we are a democracy [where voting gets people elected] … and we got into this problem because we thought a character on television could fix our problems.”
Washington also touches in here on the show ending next season, saying that this gives the cast and crew a chance to put their all into the show and try to out on a high note. It’s a fascinating interview, but one that we do wish ran longer. This is one of the reasons why we wish The Daily Show ran for an hour these days, especially so that you could spend almost the entire second half-hour on an interview and then putting things out in the form of a podcast. Then again, this is coming from someone who is a big fan of the entire medium of long-form interviews.
Hopefully, season 7 will come on the air and be everything that you want for it to be — smart, relevant, and with a happy ending to go along with it.
