Grey’s Anatomy season 13 finale review: Did Stephanie leave? Meredith’s news
Specifically, it appeared in the closing minutes that Megan was back … but was it really her? Given that this is a Shonda Rhimes-produced show, it feels like a mistake to say with absolute certainty that it was. We never actually saw her face! The only thing that we do have some verification on at present is that Owen and Amelia are preparing for it to be her, and for the entire fabric of the show to be altered forever as a result of that. (Also, it should be noted that Bridget Regan may have some more time later this year, depending on when The Last Ship wraps, to film some more episodes.)
The arrival of Megan does also mean something big to Meredith and Nathan, as she was the one to tell him that she was still alive. He left her to go and see her, and Meredith told him knowing that this could be the end of their romantic relationship. This seems to be the case. Meredith told him she understood, since if this was Derek who was coming back, she would have done the same exact thing. Still, it does have to hurt to finally get close to someone and allow yourself to get to that level, only for something like this to happen as a result.
As mentioned, it still feels best to take a wait-and-see approach on Megan since she’s yet to actually be seen on the show just yet.
Is Stephanie leaving the game?
It certainly seems to be the case. Edwards started off the episode stuck in the midst of a fire with a young child, and she made it her mission to get the two of them to safety. What she did here was pretty epic given that this was not the Stephanie that was around before the fire; she was caring, and while she did freak out here and there in the midst of all of the chaos going on, this was more or less expected when you consider what she was up against.
There were MULTIPLE times over the course of the night where it appeared as though she was not going to be successful in this mission. Yet, she was! Not only that did both she and the child survive, but she took I upon herself at this point to determine that it was time for a big life shift. She quit her job at the Grey Sloan in order to take on some other potential avenues and opportunities away from medicine. This was, effectively, a quest for her to find herself.
Final verdict
Really good finale. There were a lot of fantastic twists and turns, but more than that, this represented further an evolution of the show to where it’s not just about the epic danger and the heartbreak. It’s about adults doing adult things and dealing with the consequences. Stephanie was not the only departure during the episode — Eliza Minnick was also fired after she failed to report that Stephanie was missing, putting her life in jeopardy.
Now, the long wait to determine the future of the series, and the future for these characters, truly begins. Grade: A-.
