Mike Huckabee blasts SNL for Sarah Huckabee Sanders portrayal

Mike Huckabee

Consider this one of the least-surprising headlines of the day: Mike Huckabee is standing up for his daughter thanks to an SNL sketch. The sketch in question was the return of Melissa McCarthy as Sean Spicer this past weekend, where Aidy Bryant came on playing the part of Sarah Huckabee Sanders. She told a couple of jokes, and then Spicer effectively reeled her offstage after hiding in the bushes to get into his all-familiar diatribe with reporters.

You can see the sketch below if you haven’t already. Meanwhile, here is some of what the former Governor Huckabee had to say while on Fox Business:

“I thought it was a little bit silly, sexist, [and] misogynist, but my daughter is certainly capable of handling a whole lot worse than that … She is a great wife an absolutely wonderful mother to three beautiful preschool children and she’s a generous and thoughtful person who is very charitable in her life, good to her friends and ultimately, here’s what we taught her, that she’s going to be judged by God, not by some not so funny comedy writers…”

Obviously, Huckabee is going to stand up for his daughter — if he didn’t do it, he’d be ripped by fellow conservatives for it. There’s nothing shocking about what he said. The irony here comes mostly in that Sarah Huckabee Sanders, outside of a couple of silly jokes, probably was treated infinitely better by the show than Sanders. One of the jokes seemed to be that she was much more qualified for the job as Press Secretary than he was, and they even went so far as to describe her as “charming.”

Depending on whatever does happen with Spicer over the coming months, it’s certainly possible that Bryant could be reprising this role in the future. That would be a good thing for SNL given that so far, most of their headlines are coming from outsourcing key roles within the Trump Administration. They need some of their own cast members to start to pluck up a few of these parts.
