Scream Queens, Criminal Minds Beyond Borders canceled: No season 3

Queens

The end of the road is here this morning for a pair of separate network TV properties in Scream Queens and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.

These two shows were two of the last remaining holdovers beyond Chicago Justice at NBC and Hunted over at CBS, and unfortunately, neither looks to be coming back for a third season beyond some fan enthusiasm.

Scream Queens – In this case, it’s fairly easy to figure that the decision was a little bit harder to figure out than it would appear to be in theory. After all, this is a show that does have a substantial following online — it’s trending worldwide following the cancellation announcement this morning. The problem is that many of its viewers are international, and also that many of them either wait to binge-watch it or don’t choose to watch it via legal mains. The linear live+same day ratings for season 2 were terrible. Fox probably wanted to bring it back, but couldn’t figure out a way to make it financially viable.

Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders – Unfortunately, the writing was on the wall here the moment that CBS renewed Elementary, Code Black, and The Amazing Race for other seasons. They had to cancel at least one of their bubble shows, and the cost of the series plus also it coming from an outside studio were likely two of the reasons why it’s now over. There wasn’t much faith put in the second season to begin with. Were it not for the cancellation of Doubt, it’s not all that clear when it would have premiered.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to see other venues where these shows could return. While ABC would seem like a decent home for Beyond Borders given the studio connection, it would be certainly weird for two offshoots of the same franchise to air on different networks. It may not even be contractually allowed.
