Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 5, Speechless season 2 renewals confirmed
How about some renewal news when it comes to some of television’s best comedies? Specifically, let’s lead the way with Speechless season 2.
After coming on board the ABC schedule with a ton of heart and a lot of laughs, the inspiring family comedy will be returning for a second season. ABC made you sweat this one out in comparison to many of their other shows, but rest assured that it’s going to be back. The same goes, for the record, for Fresh Off the Boat and The Goldbergs, which will be back for two additional seasons. The Real O’Neals and Imaginary Mary to date are the biggest comedy casualties for the network, which established itself thanks to Modern Family as one of the premier destination for family-based sitcoms. (If you did miss the news, Modern Family is also going to be back through season 10 after a new deal was struck with the bulk of the cast.)
Elsewhere on the comedy landscape, Fox officially ordered a Brooklyn Nine-Nine season 5, which ensures that most of their top-quality comedy lineup will be back. The Last Man on Earth was also renewed despite some ratings scares, and the big mystery at present is the status of New Girl, arguably the series that kicked off the entire comedy movement in the first place on the network.
In general, network expectations on comedies these days are different given that the demand to watch many of them live is completely in the toilet. Getting over a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic now constitutes a smash hit, and the biggest thing to hope for is that you launch a show that fares around a 1.4-1.5 level and gets good DVR viewership and a nice streaming deal. With those powers combined Captain Planet style, maybe you stick around for a little bit longer.
