American Gods renewed for season 2 — after just two episodes!
Deadline was the first to report on the news Thursday, with programming president Carmi Zlotnik sounding off with the following news on the order:
“Bryan Fuller, Michael Green and Neil Gaiman have evolved the art form of television narratively, structurally and graphically with American Gods, and we’re thrilled to be working again with these artists as they continue to build the worlds and wars of the gods.”
Early indications are that American Gods season 2 will run for at least eight episodes, and maybe more depending on what Fuller, Green, and the network decide to do. For now, the most important thing is to toast to everything wonderful happening with the series today. The writing is outstanding, the cinematography is beautiful, and Ian McShane and Ricky Whittle are killing it as Mr. Wednesday and Shadow Moon.
On a deeper level, it’s also celebratory to see Fuller with a network partner who recognizes his talent and allows him further freedom to create fantastic television. The cancellation of Hannibal does still sting in that sense, and that sting is only covering up the cancellation of Pushing Daisies. He’s one of TV’s most beautiful minds in terms of crafting stories that are a pleasure to eyes and ears. Starz is also establishing themselves as a premiere home for great TV, in between this show, Outlander, The White Princess, and Power airing over the course of several months. This is without even including the excellent Black Sails, which wrapped earlier this year.
As for what season 2 will look like, isn’t part of the fun to surprise? There will be anticipation surrounding season 2, but it feels wrong to look forward too much when there are still six more episodes this season to enjoy. These are episodes that will be the center of further coverage here at the site; for more on that, including previews and reviews, be sure to head over to the link here.
