Matthew Morrison will grace Grey’s Anatomy season 13 episode 23

Matthew Morrison

It was easy to speculate last week that Grey’s Anatomy season 13 episode 23 would mark the debut of Matthew Morrison. It’s easier to celebrate now that it’s official.

In a post on his personal Twitter, Morrison himself confirmed that Thursday night will feature the debut of his somewhat-mysterious character, though it may not be all that mysterious at all. It’s gotta be Jo’s husband, right? There’s mounting evidence in a couple of different ways.

1. The story – At the end of this past episode, Alex made it clear that he is hunting someone down, and there aren’t many other people that a guy this prideful would look for. Jo’s husband is someone he could blame for much of his own problems, and given he still obviously loves Jo, he’ll view this in some corner of his mind as “protecting her.”

This story will lead to Alex attending a medical conference, supposedly just because this man may be there. The groundwork for that is laid out already in the information released by ABC.

Also, the photo mentioned above features Morrison “bleeding.” Did Alex punch him in the face?

2. The fact that it’s Morrison – Do you think an actor of the former Glee star’s caliber is going to be hired to play Doctor #3 and sit around in the background? The role has to be somewhat meaty to get him on board.

3. It’s the end of the season – This is the time where you blow the lid off the joint. Grey’s Anatomy is a show currently at a simmer when it comes to the drama, so the timing seems right for Shonda Rhimes to bring it to a boil and leave the viewership screaming in some unusual combination of joy and agony.

Somewhere within this cauldron of evidence is the truth, and when Morrison debuts tonight, all will be revealed. There’s another episode beyond this one next week, and that’s where further closure can be established on the legacy of season 13 — one that, for the record, has done a very good job of balancing out fun, celebratory moments with the super-dark and super-serious.

There’s one other conspiracy theory to keep in mind going into tonight’s episode, as well — Owen’s sister could be alive. Kevin McKidd’s directing this episode, so imagine the feeling he may have gotten having to put himself through that much of an emotional wringer.
