The Originals season 5 renewal confirmed; Joseph Morgan series lives on

The Originals season 5 renewalWe were hoping that we’d get news about The Originals season 5 renewal a little bit later in the week; The CW gave us a gift early!

Today, the network confirmed that the Joseph Morgan – Daniel Gillies drama, a spin-off of The Vampire Diaries, is going to return for a season 5 following some solid ratings this spring. This will mark the first year of the show airing without the flagship around, and this also introduces a wide array of storytelling possibilities. We figure that we’ll probably talk a lot about whether or not the likes of Candice King, Matt Davis, or someone else could turn up over here in a more regular capacity.

Anyhow, the one change for season 5 will be a creative one, as Michael Narducci will be departing as showrunner; Julie Plec is going to take over more of the day-to-day duties. (We’re going to miss Narducci’s work very much — he was excellent at guiding some of the darker mythology of the show, especially the past couple of years when things could have started to become routine.)

This is great news given that it does help to further cement some of The CW’s plans moving forward. We know now that both Frequency and No Tomorrow are over. Meanwhile, it was also announced a little bit earlier today that iZombie is also going to be coming back for another season. The only CW properties for the season otherwise that are over are the aforementioned Vampire Diaries and then also Reign, which is going to be coming to a close a little bit later this summer. They’ve also ordered some new series, but this is something that we’re going to get into more in a separate article. (Let’s just say that The CW really wasted no time at all getting some of their announcements out there today — we didn’t expect these for another day or two.)
