Timeless canceled by NBC; could season 2 exist elsewhere?

Timeless canceled

Why is Timeless canceled? We wish that we had an answer for you at the moment, but alas, we don’t. All we know is that it’s true. NBC is not moving forward with a season 2 of the Eric Kripke – Shawn Ryan series.

For much of the past several weeks, we’ve had a wide array of emotions leading up to the cancellation. We wanted to have hope based on how much we love the series, its cast, and its story. Yet, the ratings also fell hard earlier this week without The Voice as a lead-in. We do blame some different things for this, including a timeslot that wasn’t appealing to a family audience. Unfortunately, the reasoning doesn’t quite matter at this point. The show, at least for the time being, is dead.

Is there a chance that it could exist somewhere else? It’s a little early to tell, but one of the things that may complicate the efforts is that NBC has a partial ownership in the show. Therefore, if anyone had an incentive to keep it, they do. Deadline reports that the show didn’t lose money. There were plenty of reasons to keep the show around, but sometimes things just don’t work out. NBC may have felt they had better options elsewhere. Maybe you could look now to places such as Syfy or Hulu as potential suitors, given that the two have connections to NBC already; beyond that, though, there could be challenges.

If this is the end, we will cherish this series as one of our favorites of this past season. It had a fun spirit of adventure, and a story with a whole lot of ambition moving into season 2. We ultimately can’t be that enraged at NBC even though we’d like to; while the timeslot wasn’t perfect, it did get a great lead-in for the first part of the season in The Voice. We just hope that if the show doesn’t continue, we do get a chance to see Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter, Malcolm Barrett, and the rest of the cast in some other places very soon.

For now, farewell Timeless — thanks for being creative, inspiring, and incredible television for the entirety of your run.
