Britain’s Got Talent act Angara Contortion latest subject of aggravating criticism

Why do we care so much about Britain’s Got Talent acts having some element of professional experience? Angara Contortion is the latest example of that.

Over the course of the past 48 hours since winning over the judges and viewers at home with their impressive display, the ITV series is now under fire after it was revealed that the four-piece group has been a part of an elaborate Cirque de Soleil show for a rather long time. They’re experienced, and maybe to some that is construed as an unfair advantage over some of the other acts.

Now that we’ve said that, it’s also hardly like this group is famous. If viewers wanted all of BGT to feature acts with little to no performing experience, we’d be left with a field of people who were largely mediocre at best. The days of there being a Susan Boyle or a Paul Potts out there are largely over. There just aren’t that many undiscovered people in an age where anyone can get on YouTube and belt out a song if they have talent. Groups like Angara Contortion are ones that need a ton of professional experience before doing a show like this because the stakes of what they are doing are so high. With a singer, they can go on stage and the worse thing that could happen is they miss a note or forget the words. With contortionists, you run the risk of severe injury or worse if something goes wrong. You can’t be green at this.

If you are for whatever reason concerned about experienced acts in the semifinals, the solution is simple — just don’t vote for them to win. The only time we’d ever have an issue with established acts in the final is if they are already household names. For example, if Little Mix or Adele showed up in the semifinals, we’d have an issue with that. We know that the line between famous and obscure is a thin one sometimes, so there has to be some discretion there. We just don’t see professional experience as a negative, given that in so many other walks of life we want that as a sign that the job is getting done properly.
