Saturday Night Live – Chris Pine promo: Dancing like everyone’s watching

Chris Pine promo

Today, NBC released the latest Chris Pine promo for this weekend’s Saturday Night Live, and it may make you dance more than an episode of Ellen.

This promo features the upcoming Wonder Woman star breaking it down, goofing off, doing some visual sight gags, and ultimately reenacting one of those weird Skittles commercials with cast member Kate McKinnon. All the while, the music of LCD Soundsystem (the musical guest for the installment) plays in the background. The bit with the pregnancy prosthetic is probably the most surprising and the funniest part of it overall.

Is this the most hilarious promo in SNL history? Probably not, but it achieves something that very few of them do: Memorability. Remember that it’s very hard to be funny in 30 seconds, but this promo does a good job of giving us manic energy and super-high spirit. This promo makes you want to be a part of this world, and have a good time with Pine as he dances around and goofs off. This gives you a good sense of his personality and how excited he is to be there. Anytime you are a movie actor hosting SNL, you want to look like the gig is a labor of love and that you’ve been spending most of your life idolizing studio 8H. If you go into it halfheartedly, everyone is going to know that it is something that really doesn’t mean all that much to you and no one will enjoy it including the viewers.

Ultimately, this promo makes us far more excited for Pine’s show than we were previously. This is no disrespect to Chris and his talent, but when you look at the upcoming hosting lineup for the month of May, you have Melissa McCarthy on the 13th and then Dwayne Johnson on the 20th. Both of these performers have hosted several times already and are in the pantheon for the greatest hosts of the past several decades. Even if he ends up being amazing it’s pretty difficult to match up that level of hype. Maybe that’s something he can achieve if he’s awesome this time and hosts again down the road.
