With The Walking Dead season 8 on the horizon, there’s a good bit to expect … and also a good many things to fear. Will Andrew Lincoln’s Rick survive? Given that he is the central character on the show, you obviously expect that he will. With that being said, though, there are still a wide array of different things that could go wrong, and you do have to prepare for some of that.
Based on what show executive producer Scott M. Gimple had to say on the subject of Rick’s preparedness for what comes next to TVLine, it does seem as though the character has properly braced himself for anything that could be coming down the road:
“[He] will suffer any loss, even his own self, to give his people and other people the life that they should live, where the world belongs to all of them and not just one person. A real life … That’s the only choice. So he’s willing to face the losses.”
One of the things that Rick has probably received and achieved through his journey on the show so far is better understanding that there is a real, tangible difference between the life that he had and the life that he has now … and there are only a certain number of ways to make it worthwhile. One of these said ways is probably coming up with an adequate way to ensure that those who are around him are better cared for. He wants a legacy, which is something that many people often will think about over the course of their lives. This season marks an opportunity to earn one further, and not just be someone suffering under oppression at the hands of Negan or anyone else.
Granted, there’s a heck of a lot of work to be done still, given the sole fact that the victory against Negan was just a temporary one. Most of his people are still alive, and Alexandria still has to reel and recover from what happened with the Scavengers betraying him. That was one of his real sources of people, and it doesn’t seem like they are going away anytime soon. Remember here that Pollyanna McIntosh is one of the people recently promoted to series regular.
