Law & Order: SVU season 18 spoilers: Hypnosis and an upcoming case

Law & Order: SVU is unfortunately not airing tonight, but we’ve got some season 18 scoop now for another episode coming up.

Specifically, we are talking today about “Spellbound,” which is going to be coming your way on Wednesday, May 10. Based on the initial details that are out there at the moment courtesy of NBC, it looks as though hypnosis is actually going to be one of the major themes of the story. Stuart Townsend will be stopping by in the episode as a “charismatic spiritual healer,” one who faces an investigation by the SVU after a client says that they were incapacitated and then assaulted by him while under hypnosis. Basically, he put them in a situation where consent was impossible because they weren’t in control of their own actions.

It almost goes without saying here that this looks like it will be a difficult episode for many of the characters, and for a clear reason — trying to find the right angle and method to investigate this. With this show in particular, there is a certain bit of dot-connecting that goes into it. You often know who the guilty party is and what should happen to them, but you have to figure out a way to collect the evidence and make the proper case in court. It’s challenging.

Obviously for most SVU viewers, what is also challenging is having to wait the lengthy span of time between when the show last went off the air and when it’s coming back next week. If nothing else, you can celebrate that this is the final hiatus of the season. Following that, it should be smooth sailing the rest of the way at least in terms of there being a lot of content to watch. (Unfortunately, we cannot use the words “smooth sailing” for a single SVU episode ever.)
