13 Reasons Why season 2: Author suggests it could happen
While at first you may turn up an eyebrow when it comes to the thought of the show venturing into uncharted territory, remember that it’s certainly possible in the TV medium. The Leftovers is doing this right now despite the Tom Perrotta book ending some time ago; this is a different interpretation of a story, and as a result of that, there could be opportunities for another season of 13 Reasons Why.
To make things all the more appealing to Netflix, author Jay Asher seems to be very much on board with the idea. While he doesn’t seem interested in writing a sequel, he told Entertainment Weekly that he’d be happy to see the show take on some unanswered questions in its own way:
“I’d just like a continuation of all those characters … What happens to Clay? How do people react to what Alex did at the very end? What’s going to happen to Mr. Porter? I’d thought of a sequel at some point. I’d brainstormed it, but decided I wasn’t going to write it. So, I’d love to see it.”
A 13 Reasons Why season 2 is probably a long ways off even if the show decides to give it a green light, but what is fairly interesting here is the contrast between various authors and storytellers when it comes to adapting source material. For example, over at HBO the team behind Big Little Lies doesn’t seem to be remotely interested in the idea of continuing the story without groundwork laid via the source material. Here, it’s a different situation.
If we do ever get some more news on the possibility of a 13 Reasons Why season 2, we will be sure to report it here at CarterMatt. For the time being, though, we’d simply advise you to watch the show (if you haven’t already) given that it’s one of the most powerful, immersive television experiences you’re going to have in 2017. Netflix probably has plenty of time to figure out what they want the future for the property to be; the only issue that they may run into is that if they wait too long, they may face some challenges trying to ensure that they get everyone back in the end.
(Warning: Spoilers from the finale ahead.)
Based one of the final scenes from the show, we do think that there was a significant cliffhanger that came courtesy of Tyler and what he was doing hiding the guns in his sweater chest. A school shooting seems incredibly harrowing, especially given current events, but it is something that the producers could decide to explore since it’s an important topic that might shed some light on why it’s happening as often as it is – much like teen suicide.
