Law & Order: SVU season 18 spoilers: First look at ‘The Newsroom’

We wish that we could tell you that we had an update on The Newsroom, the HBO show starring Jeff Daniels as Will McAvoy. We have a feeling that “The Newsroom” episode of Law & Order: SVU is not going to be of the same tone, though we do still imagine it’ll be incredibly compelling and yet another story on the show that reflects real life — perhaps even more than the writers knew it would at the time in which it was created.

This episode is going to air on NBC come Wednesday, April 26, and per a press release, this will be an episode that puts cable news into the spotlight. The show may be fiction, but you will see clear parallels between what’s happening here and what happened to Fox News head Roger Ailes many months ago that led to his departure from the network.

Specifically, Bonnie Somerville is going to guest star as a powerful news anchor, one who chooses to make an on-air confession of being raped by her boss. As a result of this, Benson and Barba are going to be put in a difficult situation of having to get witnessing willing to risk their job status in order to make sure justice is served. There are some superficial parallels here between this episode and “Net Worth,” where we saw the duo try to convince Missy Peregrym’s character to realize that the job offer in the millions wasn’t worth staying silent in terms of her testimony.

Back when this episode was written, obviously the SVU team did not have the foresight to know of the New York Times report that would contain allegations that Fox News paid off settlements related to their popular host Bill O’Reilly; as a result of this report, the story of Ailes is now once more in the forefront. In turn, the same can be said for this episode. It’s going to be an important one, especially when it comes to exposing everything from rape to sexual harassment in a workplace that is unfortunately often dominated by men.

We imagine that there will be even more to report on when it comes to “The Newsroom” tomorrow night after the latest Law & Order: SVU episode airs on NBC.
