Star Trek: Discovery reveals name of Sonequa Martin-Green character
(Obviously, there are some spoilers ahead from The Walking Dead finale last night. Be aware of that before you continue!)
Today, the CBS All Access confirmed that the actress, whose character of Sasha Williams was killed off of the zombie drama last night, is going to be appearing on the new show as First Officer Michael Burnham. The name Michael is probably going to be way throws many people for a loop, even in an era where we’ve had female TV characters with names such as Charlie, Eddie, Alex, and Chuck. There have not been too many female Michaels within the pop-culture spectrum.
As for the fact that she is a First Officer, Michael Burnham is a little bit different than most other Star Trek main characters in that she’s not the Captain of the ship. Typically, we’ve had that with Kirk, Picard, Janeway, and others over the course of the series — this show is offering something different and with a different perspective, which could be in part what makes it interesting. Also, we figure that it’s certainly possible that she gets a promotion somewhere along the way to Captain, that way we end up seeing a little bit more of an arc with a beginning, a middle, and an end.
CBS clearly realizes just how much pressure is on them in order to deliver a really great story with Star Trek: Discovery, given that they’ve delayed the show on a couple of occasions in order to ensure that everything is done correctly. At one point, it was scheduled for this spring, but it now looks like it’ll be coming later this year. Maybe Comic-Con in San Diego this summer will prove to be a great time to get a little more insight into the show and what’s being planned.
