Doctor Who season 10: Matt Smith, David Tennant supported Peter Capaldi post-exit

Matt Smith

Earlier this year, Peter Capaldi made the announcement official that he is exiting Doctor Who at the end of season 10. That marks a huge passing of the torch for the series, and it’s likely one that does not come easy to anyone who puts on the famous coat of The Doctor (or whatever costume he is wearing at the time).

Yet, you have to consider it a necessary evil. Change is healthy, it’s a part of life, and it’s absolutely ingrained into the fabric of this show and what it is. If you don’t have things evolving, then you have a show that remains constant instead. Constancy is boring after a time, and that’s why the Doctors change.

What we do know is that for Capaldi, it was not the easiest choice in the world to say goodbye to the role. Current showrunner (remember, he’s leaving too) Steven Moffat effectively said as much on the subject to SFX in a recent interview, and made it clear that

“I think it was quite an emotional decision for him … It was quite emotional for all the Doctors. They’ve all found it very difficult.

“I know David and Matt got in touch with him straight away when they heard, because stepping down from that role isn’t nothing. At the same time, from the day you get it, you know that day is coming. And if you’re Scottish you probably think about it every second day! This is going to end.”

Capaldi will have plenty of time to bask in his final days as the Doctor. Remember that the upcoming season of the series has not even premiered yet, so he will have a chance to see those episodes air and then the Christmas Special that marks his big departure. That episode will feature most likely the new addition to the show, whoever it is. We’re still likely months away from the next Doctor being revealed, but we know that much of the press is salivating already over the possibilities.

What we do hope is that there are probably going to be episodes ahead that allow for everything that we love about this show and Capaldi’s work — hope, humor, and imagination. This is a show that wear many hats, but so long as it keeps changing them out, we’re sure to be happy in the end.
