Dancing with the Stars 24 review: Rashad Jennings, Normani Kordei shine

Erika Jayne

For its second week, Dancing with the Stars on ABC had the task of trying to fit in performances from the entire cast into two hours. Not only that, but they also had to figure out a way to cram in results at the end of the show while they were at it.

Given that we’ve got a lot to get to in the show tonight, let’s not dilly-dally around here. Below, you can see our take on all of the routines as they happen! Let us know what you think about some of them in the comments.

Nancy Kerrigan and Artem Chigvintsev – Nice start to the show. These two are getting the “you’re very good, but we’re not invested in putting you at the end of the show yet” edit. She is so relatable that we do think that she’s going to stick around for a good while. Score: 28.

Erika Jayne and Gleb Savchenko – Speaking of people getting that same edit, Erika came out this week in hopes of being known as something more than a camp performer who could entertain the crowd. This is some sort of sultry cop routine that did bring the chemistry to it, and we’ll give her credit for the story. An improvement over last week. Score: 28.

Charo and Keo Motsepe – We’ll be the first to admit that Charo is a little bit of a laugh riot, and someone who brings a lot to the table with entertainment. With that said, we do certainly think that the judges overrated the score here just based on the Charo of it all. Score: 25.

Nick Viall and Peta Murgatroyd – Was Len Goodman a William Shatner fan or something? Given how cranky he was about this routine, we’d start to think so. While Nick still has some issues that he’s got to work through, at the same time this was a better routine than the one Charo put out there. Score: 25.

Heather Morris and Maksim Chmerkovskiy – While Maks is recovering from an injury, Heather is going to be dancing with Alan Bersten. This was a fantastic jive all things considered, one with a lot of movement and technique. Yet, Len continued his incredibly grumpy streak with his coring of the number. Score: 30.

Bonner Bolton and Sharna Burgess – This was a lovely Viennese waltz, and a nice change of pace from what we saw from him the first place. Bonner’s not a great technical dancer just yet, but this was far and away better than the first routine. This was some great evidence of the potential to come. Score: 29.

Simone Biles and Sasha Farber – Sasha did get off time at one point early on in the dance, and this was the biggest clear weakness in the dance. While everything she did was great, it also wasn’t in sync with a lot of what Sasha was doing. Score: 29.

Chris Kattan and Witney Carson – This was a pretty sad package, given that within this you learned a little bit more about Chris’ history, and about a devastating neck injury that made it really difficult for him to dance at all. This is never going to be his thing, but we like that he’s giving it a go this season. The judges’ comments were FAR nicer than the score. Score: 22.

Normani Kordei and Val Chmerkovskiy – This was IMPRESSIVE. Not only did they have a ton of content in here, but the Fifth Harmony singer was energized despite having a small window of rehearsal time given that she’s traveling back and forth to Asia with her band. Score: 32.

Rashad Jennings and Emma Slate – What’s really fantastic about the way Rashad dances is just how natural it feels. Even though you know that he’s worked hard at it, he has a way that makes it appear as though it was almost no effort at all. Consider this his seconds straight great outing. Score: 32.

Mr. T and Kym Johnson – The judges were very generous to Mr. T here, given that a big part of his dancing arsenal remains “pretending to punch things.” We love the guy, and it’d be great to see him last for however long he possibly can. We’re just not altogether sure how long that’s going to be at present given the current trajectory of the competition. Score: 22.

David Ross and Lindsay Arnold – This was the last dance of the night, and David remains a hoot to watch. We’re not always sure he’s a great dancer, but the guy knows how too boogie and how to entertain. Technically, it wasn’t great unfortunately. Score: 27.
