Feud: Bette & Joan episode 5 spoilers: The Bette Davis Oscar ‘campaign’
Through tonight’s episode, you got a sense that some Oscar buzz was brewing surrounding Bette Davis’ performance in the movie, and we don’t think it’s much of a spoiler (this is real life, after all) that she ends up getting a nomination for the role. This infuriates Joan, given that she feels as though she was the one truly responsible for working this project into existence in the first place. She wants to be able to have her credit for it, and not be overshadowed.
Therefore, she will kick off a process to do anything and everything that she can in order to ensure that her co-star Davis doesn’t win it. This may not be much, but in this situation she may figure that it is all that she can do.
Feud: Bette & Joan episode 5 synopsis – “Bette is on track to win a record-breaking third Best Actress Oscar. Joan and Hedda launch a clandestine campaign against her. Written by Ryan Murphy; directed by Ryan Murphy.”
You know that when Murphy is both writing and directing an episode of his own show, he’s putting the utmost of effort and care into every aspect of it. This isn’t meant as a slam against anyone else working on the show; it’s more of a trend that showrunners tend to handpick some of the episodes they deem the most important and then take as large of a role in them as possible.
This should be the juiciest episode of the entire show to date — if you thought that the battle between Bette and Joan was bad so far, just go ahead and brace yourself for what is coming up next. Oscar sabotage isn’t something we hear all that much about today, but we certainly do think it’s possible. There are all sorts of things that people will do in order to ensure that people win Oscars. Therefore, it shouldn’t be a shock to imagine people doing the opposite, as well.
