Is Last Week Tonight with John Oliver new tonight? It’s a fair question to ask, and it’s a show that you almost certainly want given the craziness of the past several days. Given the sheer amount of time that Oliver has spent to date discussing Obamacare and the health-care movement. Trumpcare is no longer a thing, and with that, we could have imagined him having an epic dance sequence with all of the Bolivian zebras he could find for the occasion.
Alas, this is just not happening. There is no new episode of the HBO series this week. The show obviously will be back, but it’s been a run of several new installments in a row at this point. This is a show that runs mostly throughout the year, so there are bound to be some breaks in the action here and there. It’s much like Saturday Night Live in that capacity, though it actually does in this instance even more shows than this one. (Specifically, last year there were 30, and the year before that 35. That’s a lot to cover over the course of a week!)
We of course want Oliver to touch further on healthcare, but part of the beauty of this show is that you don’t actually know often what he’s going to be touching on before the episodes actually air. At times, he goes against the grain and discusses at length things that are underlying issues. This is actually part of what we enjoy about Last Week Tonight the most. Some of our favorite segments, including the one on NFL stadium funding and the U.S. territories that don’t get all of the same rights as states, taught us so much that we didn’t know before. In this era of political omnipresence, sometimes these under-the-radar stories need a light more than ever. Of course, a few Donald Trump jokes here and there are also worthy of laughs.
