Dancing with the Stars 24: William Shatner campaigning against Nick Viall

William Shatner -

Here’s something that we did not expect going into Dancing with the Stars 24Entertainment icon / former Star Trek star William Shatner being intent on sending Nick Viall home. He’s a man on a mission against the former Bachelor star, and judging from a wide range of posts that he’s made on social media, he’s not altogether pleased with some of his behavior stemming back from Andi Dorfman’s season of The Bachelorette.

What’s Shatner’s strategy? Some of it seems to be casting as many votes against the reality star possible, and by that, he means mostly using votes on anyone other than him since you can’t vote directly against someone. Shatner doesn’t seem to be interested in giving Nick a chance to redeem himself on this show. While we would understand if some people were surprised by some of this, we’re really not given that Shatner’s been very active discussing a wide range of different TV shows over the years, and is probably more engaged on the medium than the majority of people are.

Now that we’ve said all of that … we find it hard to criticize Nick heavily at all based on his first week on the show. He was a surprisingly good dancer, and easily through one week is better than any of the other former Bachelor guys like Jake Pavelka, Sean Lowe, and Chris Soules were in theirs. Also, he was surprisingly funny and seemed to understand that fun competition isn’t something that needs to be shied away from. If this is a tone that he replicates for the majority of the season, we think he will win over many skeptics.

Alas, he’s not winning over Shatner, and we almost feel rather-bad for him after seeing his frowny-face response to Bill’s campaign. Ultimately, though, we feel like Nick’s been through this experience enough at this point to know you cannot please everyone, and the best thing that he can possibly hope for is to do enough to make some of his loyal fans happy. If he can do that, he’s got a reasonably good shot of being around on the series for a long time to come.

Based on his first week, we’d say that Nick’s got a very good shot of making it at least to the top six. We’ll see how that fluctuates from here.
