TV Madness 2017: Supergirl and Vikings open Round Two
Round Two of the TV Madness 2017 tournament is here! The first round of results are tabulated, and we’ll go through some of that in the showdown today between two shows in Supergirl and Vikings who both pulled out wins. While they weren’t as commanding as some of the other victories we’re seeing elsewhere in the tournament at the moment, they are impressive nonetheless since all you need to do is keep winning, regardless of the total, to get to the finish line.
Below, we size up the two contenders, how they got here, and why they should be worried about each other as the latest round of polls open.
Supergirl (#8 seed) – We’ve had top seeds fall in the tournament before, so saying that it’s a shock that the superhero show dethroned Game of Thrones in a 63% to 37% vote is no surprise. Yet, it’s significant nonetheless since Kara and company have cleared a major hurdle, and proven that they can take on shows with larger viewerships. Here, what they have to be concerned about is a series that is equally devoted in its own right, and loves the series even if it doesn’t always get the most publicity at times. Supergirl is super for a reason, so we’ll see what happens as the polling here opens.
Vikings (#3 seed) – The vote here was a little bit closer, with 58% of readers choosing the History epic over NCIS: Los Angeles in the first round. We expected it to get this far on the strength of some loyal base, and people who feel — understandably so — like the show is routinely snubbed at awards shows. Other than Supergirl having a big audience, the one hurdle that it may need to overcome as it moves further into the second round is the simple fact that it doesn’t have new episodes coming on the air right now. You have to find a way to rally the support of a base that may be a little more scattered out than they would be otherwise, and we do think that this is rather-difficult to do.
