Could The X Factor borrow the Britain’s Got Talent schedule?

Britain's Got Talent schedule

The Britain’s Got Talent schedule is one of many things that makes the show unique. How many other programs are there out there that make the bold decision to air a full season’s worth of live shows in just a week. It does make time blow by, but it also does make the show feel more like an event. You get completely invested for a brief period of time after the auditions, and then when it’s over, it’s over. You move on to the next thing and try to figure out other things to watch on TV.

This schedule is such a ratings success that it only makes sense that Simon Cowell would at the very least consider the move when it comes to one of his other singing shows in The X Factor, and we’ve certainly heard that he is doing that and then some. According to a report coming in now courtesy of The Sun, the show’s bosses at ITV are looking at only doing a few weeks of live shows, and then condensing down the final portion of the competition for just a week to add to the buzz and keep away viewer fatigue.

Would this work? There are clear advantages and disadvantages to the idea. For example, one of the immediate benefits to the move is that you’re making life easier on the judges. In particular, we know that doing the show is a travel nightmare for one Sharon Osbourne, as she has to routinely move between Los Angeles and London in order to take part in the show. That’s not easy given that she has her full-time job on The Talk in America.

Yet, we see a big advantage being that you could end up in a situation where you were only giving your contestants a day or two to learn a new song. The reason Britain’s Got Talent works in this structure is because the most times an act performs during the week is two. We don’t know how the live-show format works for The X Factor only giving singers a few chances to sing. It feels almost impossible that anyone would remember who they were after the fact.

We’re down for experiments with The X Factor still — at this point, the show needs to do virtually anything that it can in order to further ensure that it stays relevant moving forward. The ratings are down, and it needs a little bit of help.
