Outlander season 3: Discussing the James McAnerney casting reports

James McAnerney -

It feels like it’s been a rather long time since we’ve discussed an Outlander season 3 casting at any length, so shouldn’t this be the right time to dive further into the James McAnerney reports that are out there? It feels that way.

The truth of the matter here is that for some eagle-eyed fans of the series, they’ve been aware of McAnerney’s casting for a little while now, given that he’s been around the set in Scotland. It’s also been confirmed already that he will be one of the performers in South Africa, thanks in part to a visa photo that he posted a little ways back in February. The major publications in the UK are starting to pick up on the casting, which is why you’re seeing more news about it today than the past week or so.

As for what role he’s playing, we know that said eagle-eyed fans may have also figured that out by speculation and/or process of elimination. The main reason that we’re not reporting it here is by a sheer matter of process of elimination. There are only so many people that he could be playing from the books out of some of the possibilities. (Still, we’re a firm believer in keeping secrets that for as long as possible, especially since there is no official announcement here and also because there are plenty of people out there who don’t read the books and prefer to be surprised as a result of that.)

What we can give you here is a brief quote that James McAnerney gave to Outlander Homepage on the subject of what it was like to film the series on location there:

“Being on the Outlander set was incredible. Believe it or not, the show isn’t that big here in Scotland, as loads of people don’t have access to Amazon Prime, the platform it’s shown on here. It was way bigger than I had imagined! The detail that the art department, costume and make up departments went to was phenomenal.”

It is still ironic in a rather sad way that Outlander, a show that is so inherently Scottish, is so hard for many Scottish people to watch. If only everyday residents in the country had access to Starz, right? If so, they’d have a chance to watch a few other great series in the process.

For now, let’s give James a formal welcome to the clan! Here’s to some more exciting things to come when Outlander season 3 premieres this fall. Be sure to head over here right now to get some further news regarding the series and its production in South Africa.

As always, we welcome your thoughts in the comments. (Photo: Starz.)
