Riverdale: Should Bughead (Betty / Jughead) be exclusive?

Mrs. Carter: Could there be a more exclusive future for Bughead on Riverdale?

On tonight’s episode of Riverdale, we had a chance to see the Betty and Jughead characters (shipping name Bughead) grow closer than we’ve seen them at any point on the series to date. They kissed for the second straight episode, and while it may not be time just yet to officially label them as boyfriend / girlfriend, that does seem to be something that Jughead wants. This is a guy who already has evolved significantly since the start of the series, where we wondered whether or not he was going to be this offbeat loner for the entirety of the show’s run.

Now, it seems like there could be something serious here between these two, but there is one major problem: Archie. It’s coming specifically in two different forms.

Possible guilt that Jughead feels – While Archie already made it clear to Betty earlier on in Riverdale that he didn’t have the romantic interest in her that she did him, Jughead may still feel like he’s taking someone from his friend. That was the origin behind the dream that played out in tonight’s episode — he feels like he is stabbing his friend in the back, but we’re not entirely sure that this is something that he should hold onto. If Archie isn’t interested, doesn’t Betty have the right to move on, and shouldn’t Jughead be able to do start up a romance if Betty’s interested?

Of course, there could be one complication here and it’s the whole idea of “you don’t know what you’ve got until it’s gone”. For Bughead, Archie coming around and realizing that he does have feelings for Betty could prove to be an issue down the line.

Does Betty still have feelings for Archie? – Riverdale is only in episode 7 here — it’s not exactly like the show’s been on the air for so long that her feelings would have dissipated completely. This could hold her back, and if Jughead notices it, it could stop the relationship before it starts to get more serious.

As of right now, we’re all in on Bughead as one of the best Riverdale ‘ships — it’s the fact that we’re still so early in the series that has us a little bit nervous for their future. This is The CW, and nothing stays constant there forever.
