Mercy Street canceled by PBS after two seasons
Would it have been nice to a Mercy Street season 3? Absolutely, mostly because the show brought a great sense of history to the table and explored a different side of the Civil War than you tend to see elsewhere. Also, it was a great chance to see Josh Radnor on TV after How I Met Your Mother came to a close.
In a statement about the news, show executive producer David Zucker had the following to say:
“We sought to bring a time and place to life that is so important to understanding American history, and in a way that was meaningful, authentic and entertaining.”
Meanwhile, fellow EP David Zabel added the following:
“Together, we delivered 12 hours of compelling and worthwhile storytelling which we all take pride in. It was five years in the making and we are grateful to PBS for its loyal support.”
We hope that the Mercy Street season 2 finale offered enough closure for some people out there, though that may not be the case. Anytime there’s a sudden end to a show, these sorts of questions always end up floating around out there.
For PBS in general, we figure that there are other issues that they may want to look at and deal with for the time being. After all, any time that there is a new administration in power, especially a conservative one, you automatically have to wonder whether or not there is some danger for the entire network’s future. Fingers crossed on that one.
For the time being, PBS does remain the home of a wide array of British programming through their Masterpiece label, including Call the Midwife and Victoria, which just recently wrapped up airing its first season this past Sunday. The second season will probably premiere next year.
