Call the Midwife season 6, episode 8 (finale): A wedding; Shelagh gives birth

Call the Midwife season 6 finale -

Next week, the Call the Midwife season 6 finale will be here. With that, you’re going to get a chance to see a wedding! The question that is fair to wonder right right now is who is getting married, given that there is no guarantee that it’ll be Barbara and Tom, even if this is something that we’d like.

For the time being (note that we’re writing this part of the preview to be intentionally light on spoilers), what we can offer you is the official synopsis below:

Synopsis – “An unexpected turn of events leads to a wedding being hastily arranged. Shelagh finally goes into labour. The arrival of the pill leads to unforeseen consequences.”

Given that this is the last episode of the show before Christmas, it almost goes without saying that this would be the opportunity to see some of the biggest events pertaining to the show play out. While Heidi Thomas may have realized long before writing this episode that we would be seeing the show for many seasons beyond this, she may have still wanted to introduce a sense of closure into the story.

Aside from both Shelagh and the wedding, the arrival of the pill is most likely going to be the story with the biggest ramifications for the remainder of the series. There is an interesting moral dilemma that could come into play for the women of Nonnatus House. In some ways, we know that there are some of the incredibly-religious variety who are against the idea of contraception. However, at the same time having it be readily available will in turn significantly reduce the amount of unwanted pregnancies. This, like so many other stories before it on Call the Midwife, will be complex and layered.

Preview – The video that aired following tonight’s episode did make it clear that the Tom – Barbara wedding is in fact coming (hooray!), and that Shelagh will be getting closer to welcoming her child. There are also some more questions surrounding Patsy Mount and her future, which we will get to in a separate article soon.
