‘Grey’s Anatomy’ season 13, episode 14 review: Did Meredith return to work?

'Grey's Anatomy' season 13, episode 14 review

In this ‘Grey’s Anatomy‘ season 13, episode 14 review, we go through the highs and lows of an episode full of trauma and change. Characters were left to ponder over key decisions, and look towards what their future could be. With an Arizona and Minnick kiss, their future clearly is different than it would’ve been otherwise.

The biggest key decision of all was one Meredith Grey realizing that there was no inherent value in going against Richard Webber’s wishes. He didn’t want her to continue to protest him not being the head of the teaching program. Therefore, she eventually gave up to Dr. Bailey’s offer and decided that the holdout was over. Tremendous news! Meredith at work almost certainly equals happiness for all of us. Also, it’s clear that the hospital needs her in crunch time based on the case at the center of the hour.

The central case for the hour revolved around a mother and son who were undergoing a kidney transplant. She was happy, and eager to lend a helping hand to the kid she loved so much. Unfortunately, what happened during the operation was that if she was to give the kidney up, she’d be forced to undergo dialysis. Her life would become that much more complicated.

Oh, and there was another factor complicating things: The child’s father turning up. He was a man with a nasty past, and he is someone who was there at the hospital to make things right. The problem was that the mother didn’t want him there, and the same goes for Jo. This entire situation reminded her of her own situation with her husband, and for most of the episode, she tried to push him away. She convinced Owen to kick him out, but he didn’t listen.

This decision seemed to be the right one in the end, mostly because of the sole fact that the father was a perfect match for a kidney transplant. He was able to make his ex and his child’s lives better, and through an anonymous donation, they never had to know. It was a sacrifice to fully know that he’d changed. This may not change anything for Jo and her situation, but it showed perfectly that some people are not necessarily the same as they always were.

Arizona’s love life heats up

After that moment of bonding last week (i.e. the one where she calmed an emotional Eliza Minnick down), the two parties shared their first kiss tonight. It was romantic, and it came after Arizona struggled to stay away from her, fearful of whatever divisions there could be in the hospital.

The truth is that some people are warming up to Minnick. To be fair, Eliza is also taking some of the advice to heart from Arizona and others. It may be a tad too early to know if an Arizona and Minnick kiss really changes things in terms of their future.

Our overall take

“Grey’s Anatomy” delivered tonight a story that reminded us that these characters still are holding on to something. Meredith still wants to stand up for a cause, Jo doesn’t want to forget her past with her husband, and Riggs himself was left to ponder over the mysteries of his past. In the event, everyone moves forward — but no one is forgetting either. Grade: B.
