‘The Walking Dead’ season 7, episode 11: The Eugene and Negan story to come (photo)
Sunday night’s episode of “The Walking Dead” is entitled “Hostiles and Calamities,” and it’s a big one for Eugene and Negan. Specifically, it’s one where the former could find himself in grave danger at the hands of the latter. Consider the photo above, otherwise known as one where Negan is dangerously close to grabbing Lucille’s barbed wire, as your first sign of proof of this.
This episode may be one of the biggest showcases to date for one Josh McDermitt, as his character struggles to figure out precisely how to handle being at the mercy of his new capture. There’s a great sense of irony here in terms of purpose. At the start of his arc on the show, Eugene’s entire role was a ruse. He wanted people to think that he was someone who could be useful, and so he created the Washington plan.
Now, it’s the flip side of that. He is tremendous useful for his smithing skills, and Negan can put him to work. Of course, there has to be willingness on Eugene’s part to work, and not succumb to various threats that come his way.
Can Eugene stand his ground?
That is the big mystery surrounding this episode, given that Eugene is not a Rick Grimes or a Daryl Dixon. He brings his own skills to the table, but this will test his resilience like never before. It’s possible that “The Walking Dead” could focus on his story with Negan the entirety of this episode; it’s also possible they bounce around slightly. With installments like this, we’ve certainly seen over the years fine examples of both.
Personally, the hope is clearly that Eugene survives, and that McDermitt gets some awesome opportunities to shine in the process. We’ll discover the truth, whatever it may be, in a couple of days.
