‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ takes on Donald Trump, Sweden (video)
Tonight, “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” is returning to the air for the first time since Donald Trump’s rally in Florida, and with that, we’re going to have a chance to see (of course) some highlights of one key moment in particular.
In a video below, you can see a pretty ridiculous segment that is entitled simply “Never Fjorget” … and it is everything that you could probably want it to be and then some. Basically, this is a tribute video to an incident that never happened, and one that celebrates a number of Swedish icons — or at least the small handful of them that Americans actually know about. We’re speaking here about Swedish Fish, ABBA, IKEA, the character from the Muppets, and of course the meatballs. Yes, America’s knowledge of Sweden is pretty limited, and we have a feeling that the majority of people probably think that Stockholm is a fancy brand of stockings.
We do think that this is a very funny take on the incident, in particular Trump’s belief that if it’s on TV, then it must be true. (He apparently heard about incidents going on in Sweden from a segment on Fox News, which he’s known to watch on the regular.) The truth here is that if late-night TV is going to really hammer out many of these spoofs and parodies, they’re going to have to do so quickly. Everyone is busting out this sort of stuff at the moment, and there is now almost hyper-competition over who can be the first person to really capitalize on the Trump lunacy going on in the world.
All in all, in between this and John Oliver’s minor critique of the comment on “Last Week Tonight,” we’ve been given a great embarrassment of riches over the past two days. We’ll have to wait and see what the remainder of the late-night community brings to the table here in the days ahead.
