Cable ratings: ‘Shadowhunters’ season 2, ‘Nashville’ season 5, and ‘Suits’ season 6; who’s in danger?

For this week’s edition of Cable Ratings, let’s chronicle a trio of different shows we’re watching closely — two in terms of their future beyond this season, and then one more in terms of whether or not it could have a live on the other side of the season to come.

(Before you proceed, you’ve been warned — Thar be spoilers around these parts! We don’t know why we just wrote that out like a pirate since we’re not writing about any pirate shows.)

“Shadowhunters” – The Freeform adaptation and social-media favorite aired earlier in the week, so let’s get some of the bad news out of the way quickly with the ratings. This past episode tied a series low with a 0.2 rating in the 18-49 demographic and set a new series low with only 550,000 viewers tuning in to see it (live+same day). These are numbers that raise some eyebrows and give some cause for concern for the show’s third-season prospects.

What we’d suggest to you if you’re a fan of the show is to not wait on trying to get more of the show! Tweet about it often, encourage your friends to watch, and try to boost the numbers during the run of the show. It’s a little bit different than doing so after the fact, given that at that point, it’s not going to matter so much anymore.

“Nashville” – Meanwhile, the CMT drama posted a similar 0.2 rating for its own episode Thursday night, though it does have more viewers in 832,000. The reason why we’re not as concerned about it (though we are certainly concerned about Connie Britton’s future) is because of the fact that there is also the Hulu deal here that helps to fund the series — nobody quite knows what that deal is or how good the show’s performing over here, but it’s still absolutely getting plenty of press.

“Suits” – As a reminder, the show is already renewed for a seventh season. Our goal in including it here is to look more into what the future could be in the next year or so to come. A 0.3 rating for the most-recent episode (the same rating that we’ve seen it generate many times over now) is a slight cause for concern — if there is a reason to be hopeful, meanwhile, you can look at shows like “Royal Pains,” “Monk,” and “Psych,” who all made it to a season 8 before ending their runs. We like to think “Suits” is equally iconic in terms of entertainment and content, so why not consider that as a way to close the door?
