‘Lucifer’ renewed by Fox for season 3
If you love “Lucifer,” then the following is almost surely devilishly good news: There is going to be a third season of the show. Fox confirmed the renewal on Monday, which means that it joins “Empire” as one of the few hour-long dramas officially confirmed to be coming back for the 2017-18 season. There’s no word yet on if this season is going to be 22 episodes or not, but that’s our hope given that it functions best when it has this amount of time to breathe and play around.
It’s rather easy to figure out why Fox would want more — this is a show that has a fun, capable lead in Tom Ellis, an incredibly consistent audience, and a copious amount of source material in which it can play with. The particular timing of this renewal does help to further cement the fact that
In a statement on the announcement, here is what the network’s own entertainment President in David Madden had to say regarding the news:
“Lucifer is one of those rare shows that starts strong out of the gate, and just keeps getting better and better … Tom, Lauren [German] and the entire cast have really made these characters three-dimensional, and the production team — Jerry [Bruckheimer], Len [Wiseman], Jonathan [Littman], Joe [Henderson] and Ildy [Modrovich] — is one of the best in the business. We’d also like to thank our partners Warner Bros. for their commitment to this show and we look forward to seeing where this wildly innovative series takes us in season three.”
The jury is now out on the status of Fox’s other Monday-night fall series in “Gotham,” though we firmly expect it to also be coming back. While it does carry with it some potential costs due to it being Batman and filming in New York, its ratings are about even with those of “Lucifer.” Also, there’s a chance to tell a Harley Quinn story in the fourth season, and her popularity at the moment is fairly spelled-out.
